Will the new regulations ban sports cars on the road?

In recent months, more and more information has been circulating in the online space suggesting that legislation is to be introduced in Poland that would allegedly ban sports cars on public roads. In addition, many publications have mentioned plans to implement yellow license plates, which would be in effect for one year.

Sports cars will not be excluded from traffic

Contrary to opinions circulating online, there is no general ban on sports cars on public roads in Poland. The legislative changes being introduced do not concern a ban on a specific category of vehicles (e.g. sports cars), but focus on increasing road safety through harsher sanctions for dangerous behavior.

Amendments to the law introduce solutions to curb, among other things, the phenomenon of illegal street racing and brash driving. The changes apply to all drivers - regardless of whether they drive a sports car, passenger car, van or motorcycle.

Changes in the law: greater penalties for illegal racing and flagrant offenses

The new regulations are aimed at countering situations in which public roads are used like a race track. The regulations being introduced include, among other things, solutions for criminalizing illegal racing and increasing criminal liability in cases of extremely dangerous behavior on the road.

It is worth emphasizing that the goal of the legislator is to reduce risky activities, not to eliminate a certain type of car from the road.

Where did the topic of yellow license plates come from?

It is true that there have been reports of the introduction of license plates with a yellow background (with red characters), but these apply to vehicles intended for sports competitions, not to all sports cars as commonly understood.

These plates are intended to be temporary in nature and can be used for vehicles used in motorsports - such as rally cars - which must be put into service for a limited period of time, for a specific purpose. The available descriptions indicate that such a period can be up to 12 months (1 year).

This means that:

  • plates will not be mandatory for all sports cars,
  • will not apply to cars sold in showrooms as "sporty."
  • application is formal and applies to vehicles registered on a temporary basis.

Important distinction: "sports car" versus "sports competition vehicle".

In online discussions, there is often a confusion of terms.

In practice:

It is the second group of vehicles that is associated with temporary release procedures and special license plates.

Based on the available and official information, it is clear:

  • There is no general ban on sports cars on public roads in Poland,
  • The legal changes are mainly concerned with combating illegal racing and increasing safety,
  • The topic of yellow license plates for up to one year refers to a special category of vehicles intended for sports competitions and registered temporarily.
